Golden Orb Spider Silk Cloth @ the Natural History Museum

Two Americans living in Madagascar have found a way to spin spider silk using the Golden Orb Spiders indigenous to the island.  Although several attempts at this have been made before, this is the first time in history that a cloth was successfully woven from the silk of spiders.

The result is nothing less than spectacular – a 11-foot long cloth in an eye-popping natural golden yellow. No dyeing needed here. To read more about these enterprising fellas and how they did it, check out this NY Times article.

If you’re interested in seeing the cloth for yourself, visit the Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
